The Dirt on Fish: Effects of Anthropogenic Sedimentation on Fish Behavior and Nutrition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Anthropogenic sedimentation has various detrimental effects in many freshwater ecosystems. Sedimentation is most often caused by erosion following deforestation or development of pristine areas that expose the soil surface to precipitation and surface runoff. Accumulation of eroded sediments in the benthic zone of aquatic ecosystems has a variety of adverse effects on the fauna (Cohen et al. 1993, McIntyre et al. unpublished manuscript).

Sound travels very efficiently underwater, so the potential area impacted can be thousands of square kilometers or more. Anthropogenic activities such as commercial shipping, recreational activities, drilling, seismic exploration or energy production (hydroelectric power plants), have made underwater noise pollution an increasing and perhaps dominant factor in the aquatic environment. Nowadays,...
متن کاملEffects of Different Levels of Fish Oil Supplementation on Performance of Broilers
Six hundred day old unsexed broiler chicks were used in a 42-d trial at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University Poultry Farm to compare the effects of different levels of fish oil supplementation on performance of broilers in terms of feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion and carcass characteristics. The chicks were randomly distributed following a completely randomized desig...
متن کاملThe effects of electromagnetic fields on fish
The objective of this paper is to survey the results of studies on the biological effects of electromagnetic fields on fish. First, the basic concepts of electromagnetism and electromagnetic spectrum and the importance of studying it in the case of fish are discussed. Then a summary of the results obtained on the effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) and radiofreq...
متن کاملTo fear or to feed: the effects of turbidity on perception of risk by a marine fish.
Coral reefs are currently experiencing a number of worsening anthropogenic stressors, with nearshore reefs suffering from increasing sedimentation because of growing human populations and development in coastal regions. In habitats where vision and olfaction serve as the primary sources of information, reduced visual input from suspended sediment may lead to significant alterations in prey fish...
متن کاملHealth Risk Assessment of Liza parsia Fish Lipids: Heavy metals and DDTs contaminations
Background: Fish is a source of nutrition; however, toxic substances and heavy metals may enter human body due to consuming contaminated fish. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of heavy metals and DDTs in Liza parsia, a fish species, and assess the health risk of the contaminants in the fish samples. Methods: The extracted fish lipid was added with n-hexane and H2SO4 and was...
